There’s
only one thing better than owning a Lappie, and
that’s owning TWO!
Having fallen for Echo a couple of years earlier, I
couldn’t resist the opportunity to own one of her
pups from her mating in Finland to Finnish Champion
Lumiturpa Nörri. The puppies are the first ever
litter born under the Pet Passport Scheme. To read

Tuukka
is truly the coolest dog I have ever known.
He is incredibly laid back and has been since he was
a tiny pup.

We find
Tuukka to be incredibly loving. I am constantly
amazed at how different our two Lappies are. Smuu is
also loving, but she has a more independent spirit –
indeed she’s quite happy to spend all day in the
garden, whereas Tuukka will always be wanting to
know where I am and follows me everywhere! He’s a
super guardian of our property and makes me feel
very safe.
‘Mowatt’s Elbereth Tuukka of TabanyaRuu, Fin
Lapphund, 6 months old dog, strongly built, good
bone and in good condition, liked his strength in
head, good eye and expression, good firm back and
correct tailset, moved soundly’.

Tuukka is very well boned and has an incredible
coat. He’s not petite like Smuu, that’s for sure!

Tuukka continued to be shown, winning many
Best of Breeds. His crowning moment
came in 2004 when he won B.O.B at Crufts
under Jeff Luscott (a well known Groenendaal
B.D.S and Beauceron exhibitor). He was
handled by three different people in three
classes, so the person on the end of the
lead certainly had no bearing. At the
time Tuukka was in fantastic condition and
super fit. He would come running with
me, clocking up about 15 miles per week so
his muscle tone was superb and he moved like
a dream. Tuukka definitely has a very
eye-catching ring presence and focuses 100%
when in the ring.
Jeff liked what he saw (despite there being
some fabulous dogs there) and took him all
the way to the top. Tuukka's brother,
Elbereth Nalle had won B.O.B at Crufts the
year before and now Tuukka was flying the
Elbereth flag again. It was such an
exciting day. There was barely any
time before Toni had to take him into the
big ring for the pastoral B.O.B winners to
go head to head. We rushed up into the
stands (a big crowd of my Lappie mates and
fellow exhibitors) and clapped and shouted
as the spotlight fell on Tuukka and Toni as
they emerged from the tunnel and glided
across the enormous arena, the stands packed
with spectators. The atmosphere was
electric and Tuukka showed his socks off. |

Unfortunately Tuukka
didn't make the final cut - rare breeds rarely do, however
myself and all his supporters had the most amazing time
cheering him and Toni on. Afterwards the Kennel Club
sent me (and all fellow B.O.B winners) a video of the B.O.B
main arena judging - including footage of the
poor unfortunate woman who got sent flying by her
Bearded Collie as she entered the arena, poor thing
I literally floated
home and then spent what was left of the evening watching
the pre-recorded Crufts hi-lights (and coverage of my boy)
in a haze of champagne bubbles - I have certainly had worse
days *vbg*.
About a year after
his big win, I noticed that he was limping so I stopped
running with him. Fast forward to 2007 when he
underwent an operation to identify and hopefully rectify the
cause. Sadly, despite the procedure, arthritis in his
shoulder has well and truly set in and his show days are
most certainly over. He remains reasonably active
however, although it is sad not to see his fantastic smooth
gait anymore.
Tuukka's calm and
laid back manner has been passed on to Sisko and her own
prodigy. He really is a dog in a million - handsome,
impressive, and so very gentle. He has inspired many
people to go on and get their own Finnish Lapphund and I
know he holds the hearts of many who have met him.
Yes, there is a lot of him, but that just means there is
even more to love:) |
